REVIEW OVERVIEW:
It’s been over three decades since Spyro Gyra started out, but this record is full of youthful energy. They bring everything that they are known for into this record. Jazz, funk, groovy, soulful, and smooth are often summed up into one word: fusion. This album is such a joy to listen to.
HIGHLIGHTS:
Down The Wire, Ice Mountain
PLAY BY PLAY REVIEW
Track 1 – Down The Wire
Funky! Grooving! The interplay with the solos and instruments is great! What an opening track! I just wish it didn’t fade out and would have come to an explosive ending.
Track 2 – Unspoken
Here’s that smooth jazz ballady track. Nice melody. I love how the tempo picks up towards the end and there’s a hint of latin jazz to it during the guitar solo.
Track 3 – Not For Nothin’
Cool funky tune.
Track 4 – Island Pond
What a beautiful ballad. This is one of those songs that people who love the sound of a saxophone will really like. Such a wonderful instrument.
Track 5 – The Tippin’ Point
Very jazzy and swingin. Really cool tune with a very cool piano solo.
Track 6 – Ice Mountain
This song has one of the more interesting grooves I’ve heard in a long time. Two thumbs up!
Track 7 – A Flower For Annie Jeanette
Did somebody say “smooth”? All I gotta say is “wow” at that fretless bass tone.
Track 8 – La Zona Rosa
Minimalistic latin jazz feel – good stuff.
Track 9 – What It Is
I know, I know, I’ve used the word “smooth” a lot in this review, but that is exactly what this music is. This track is smooth and funky.
Track 10 – A Distant Memory
Another latin influenced ballad. Pretty.
Track 11 – Make It Mine
It’s nice to hear some vocals at the end of this otherwise instrumental album. Funky and awesome! What a way to close the album.
