CD Review

This review was originally written by Jose Bernardo for www.theweeklyriff.com between 2008 and 2010.

These were Jose’s first impressions of the songs and were not written after multiple spins.

Artist: Slipknot
Album: All Hope Is Gone (2008 Special Edition – Roadrunner/Nuclear Blast)
Tracks: Tracks:  12 + 3 Bonus Tracks

Artist website: http://www.slipknot1.com

OVERVIEW:

The first Slipknot album I was introduced to was Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses. I then went back and got all the other Slipknot albums. When All Hope Is Gone was released I knew what I was in for. This is a release that is very focused and powerful. It delivers on all fronts. I was not left wanting.

HIGHLIGHTS:

Gematria (The Killing Name), Snuff, All Hope Is Gone, Wherein Lies Continue

PLAY BY PLAY

Track 1 – .execute.
Noise. Serves as an extended intro to track 2.

Track 2 – Gematria (The Killing Name)
Brutal and to the point. Excellent on all fronts.

Track 3 – Sulfur
Very cool track. We liked the chorus.

Track 4 – Psychosocial
Pretty cool.

Track 5 – Dead Memories
Not bad.

Track 6 – Vendetta
6/8 is not always used in metal and it is nice when it is.

Track 7 – Butcher’s Hook
This should be a crowd pleaser live. The chorus is very “crowd participation” friendly.

Track 8 – Gehenna
We didn’t like this track.

Track 9 – This Cold Black
Brutal!

Track 10 – Wherein Lies Continue
There are some very pretty melodies here. However, we didn’t like the song as a whole.

Track 11 – Snuff
Pretty song and very unexpected.

Track 12 – All Hope Is Gone
Awesome!

Track 13 – Child Of Burning Time (Bonus Track)
It always surprises us when a band like Slipknot pulls out a song with really pretty melodies! Awesome!

Track 14 – Vermilion Pt. 2 (Bloodstone mix) (Bonus Track)
What is this track doing on a Slipknot album? It’s really pretty but so totally different!

Track 15 – ‘Til We Die (Bonus Track)
This one’s strange, but in a good way. Very nice melodies!
