OVERVIEW

Boney James is a new artist to me. I had never heard of him until I heard this record. This is the 12th studio album for the Massachusetts native. He’s played with a lot of big names and it surprises me that I had never heard of him.

When I looked at the cover, I’ll admit, my first thoughts were: “Great, a sax player.” (Notice the lack of an exclamation point.) However, I was quickly won over. This isn’t just another sax player who wants to sound like Kenny G.

This album would definitely fall in the Smooth Jazz category. It’s got some very nice R&B touches to it. I found myself bobbing my head to the music while writing and listening.

I did a little research about this album and found out that it is supposed to be a concept album. A story of love. Every single track on this album can definitely romance the listener. This isn’t the relax and unwind kind of smooth jazz record. It’s more of a “let’s get romantic” kinda record. Very well done!

HIGHLIGHTS:

The whole album is stellar!

Track 1 – Wanna Show U Sumthin’
Awesome track. Very nice old school R&B sensibilities here. I really liked the vocal work here. It was just the right thing to spice up the track.

Track 3 – Stop, Look, Listen (To Your Heart)
Very pretty track. I love the groove.

Track 4 – Touch
Very seductive.

This is such a wonderful rendition of this song!

Track 6 – Hold On Tight
What a groove! The sax is very vocal like here.

Track 7 – I’m Gonna Love You Just A Little More Baby
Absolutely stellar! This is how a groove should be laid down.

Track 8 – City Of Light
What emotion! Love the solos.

Track 9 – Butter
The title says it all. Smooth, it is.

Track 10 – I’ll Be Good To You
