Video: “Run Baby Run” by Sheryl Crow (Instrumental Cover)

My Thoughts on Sheryl Crow

I am a fan. A big fan! Ever since “Tuesday Night Music Club”, I have found several songs to like in her every release. So, this is just the first of many songs from Crow that I will be covering. I won’t say which songs are on my list. You’ll just need to subscribe to my YouTube channel (or this blog) to find out what I cover.

The Process for this Cover

First Steps:

I started by programming the drums and deciding on the arrangement and how I wanted to end the song. I also played and programmed the “Hammond” organ sounds at this point.

When it came time to start recording real instruments at the studio, I first laid down the rhythm guitar. I got it in one take and used my Gibson Les Paul Studio 70’s Tribute.

Unlike my previous videos, this time I decided to try my Laney IRT-Studio head as a recording interface. I must admit to being very impressed with it.

After a Successful Start:

After recording the rhythm guitar, I reached out to my 339. I did a quick pass and realized that it wasn’t the right guitar for the job. I then pulledĀ up my 52 telecaster and it was perfect for doing the leads.

The recording process for the leads was surprisingly difficult because I kept messing up. However, I was able to get one whole take that I was happy with. It isn’t perfect and I could have “fixed” several spots to make it “better”. I prefer to keep whole takes intact and show me messing up because it makes the experience more “human”.

Finishing Touches:

The last thing left for me to do was to lay down a bass track. That too was a first take affair.

I really enjoyed covering this piece. I always wished that I could have a cover band project where I could cover this song. It was great to finally get this out of my system.

Below is my cover version and below that is the original music video for “Run Baby Run”
