Lyrics: “Beyond the Light” by Jose Bernardo

half deaf guitarist

Beyond the Light

“Beyond the Light” is a song I wrote while I was a student at Berklee College of Music, but never got around to recording it or publishing it. I always liked the lyrics I came up with, so I’ve decided to share them.

I wrote these lyrics while hearing Geddy Lee’s voice singing these words in my head. (It was during a period of time when I was listening to a lot of Rush. Mainly Counterparts and Test for Echo.) The song isn’t directly inspired by Rush, but I always felt like this would suit Geddy’s vocal style well.

With the exception of the bridge, I am quite happy with these lyrics. I believe that the bridge could be way better lyrically.

These lyrics could almost qualify as poetry, which is why I’ve also added this post under the “Poetry” category as well.

I hope you enjoy these lyrics.

Beyond the Light

(verse 1)

If I give in
And ask no more
Will you take me?

If I sell out
And question nothing
Will you take me?

(chorus)

Past the blue horizons somewhere
Where the greener pastures lie
Past the great divide of men
Where the silence fills the sky
Out where I can fly
Beyond the light

(verse 2)

If I’m certain
And doubt leaves me
Will you take me?

If I’m troubled
And my soul’s disturbed
Will you take me?

(chorus)

Past the fear of all rejection
Where acceptance lives inside

Past all confusing questions
Where nirvana fills the mind
Out where I can fly
Beyond the light

(bridge)

A broken man without a future
Tears of fatigue blind the eyes
A frequent partner of disaster
Years of addiction numbed the mind
A tired soldier and survivor
Wars fought with words, a voice so hoarse
A mind beside itself surrenders
To a host who isn’t home

(chorus)

Past the blue horizons somewhere
Where the greener pastures lie
Past the great divide of men
Where the silence fills the sky

Past the fear of all rejection
Where acceptance lives inside

Past all confusing questions
Where nirvana fills the mind

Will you take me?
Will you take me?
Where I can fly
Beyond the light
