OVERVIEW

If you couldn’t tell by the album title or name of the band, “Die hässliechen Kinder”, is an album by German rockers, Schelmish. I believe this is the eight studio album for the band. Their record company describes the band’s music as “medieval rock/punk/metal”.

As someone who doesn’t know any German, I can’t comment on the lyrical side of things on this album. A lot of the musical ideas worked for me. The bagpipes were totally not tacky on this album. Lots of cool ideas and execution of ideas.

Overall, very cool album!

HIGHLIGHTS :

Boulevard, Überladen, Die hässliechen Kinder, For the Clansmen, Mosaik

PLAY BY PLAY

Track 1 – Bist Du bereit
Interesting, “heavy” but really mellow track.

Track 2 – Boulevard
Cool punk song.

Track 3 – Überladen
This has a modern metal thing happening with bagpipes. Totally not Korn, in case you’re wondering.

Track 4 – Too late
Sounds kind of like something that was put out in the 90’s. I honestly think the vocals work better in German.

Track 5 – Die hässliechen Kinder
Cool track. Really liked the energy in this one as well as the melody. Anyone who likes the early works of Green Day and Blink 182 will like this track.

Track 6 – For the Clansmen
Awesome instrumental track. Totally not expecting this. I would call this a prog-rock track in the vein of 70’s prog.

Track 7 – 1212
Cool heavy track. Lyrics are German.

Track 8 – Bläsucht
This one’s more alternative rock. Good energy and groove.

Track 9 – Goresh
Here’s another track I wasn’t expecting. This one is more “electronica” oriented in style. Like a “dance” track. It is an instrumental track.

Track 10 – Sommer
This has the feel of a Southern Rock track, but doesn’t have that full sound that is present in American Southern Rock. It’s a good attempt at such a thing but falls a bit short. The guitar solo is very good though.

Track 11 – Strangers
Interesting.

Track 12 – Sag nur ein wort
I didn’t like this track. Way too mellow.

Track 13 – Mosaik
Cool, heavy track.

Track 14 – Für Euch
Cool track.
