CD Review

This review was originally written by Jose Bernardo for www.theweeklyriff.com between 2008 and 2010.

These were Jose’s first impressions of the songs and were not written after multiple spins.

Artist: Regina Spektor
Album: Far (2009 Sire)
Tracks: 13

Artist website: http://www.reginaspektor.com/

OVERVIEW

This is the fifth studio album by Spektor. She’s been labeled an alternative singer-songwriter. (Alternative to what?) The songs are kinda catchy and piano driven. Yet, not in the sense of Elton John, Billy Joel, or Tori Amos. Ms. Spektor sounds like herself. The mix is a bit bass heavy and the drums are a bit far in the mix.

HIGHLIGHTS:

Blue Lips, Folding Chair, Machine

PLAY BY PLAY

Track 1 – The Calculation
Cute song.

Track 2 – Eet
This was a bit on the annoying side due to the “eet” yodle. But otherwise an interesting song.

Track 3 – Blue Lips
Very cool track. Different.

Track 4 – Folding Chair
I knew right at the intro that I’d like this song. I wasn’t disappointed. Those are some famous chords that are quoted at the start. 😉

Track 5 – Machine
Awesome!

Track 6 – Lauging With
This reminded me of another song. I can’t remember which one, but it sounded familiar.

Track 7 – Human of the Year
Meh.

Track 8 – Two Birds
Interesting.

Track 9 – Dance Anthem of the 80’s
Meh.

Track 10 – Genius Next Door
Pretty.

Track 11 – Wallet
Cute.

Track 12 – One More Time with Feeling
Not bad.

Track 13 – Man of a Thousand Faces
I just couldn’t concentrate on this one.
