Journal: The Breakfast Experiment

No Breakfast

I stopped eating breakfast after I got out of military service in 1998. I was always nocturnal by nature, and in a way, still am. This past spring (2016), I began to question whether or not I could change and become an early riser. This prospect scared me.

The calm of working at night and rising to eat lunch, instead of breakfast, had been my way to do things for most of my adult life. During the Riff Centre years, I met with clients in the afternoons, did lesson prep at night and slept from 3am to 9am or 4am to 10am. Trying to get 6 hours of sleep but mostly failing at that since I have sleep-onset insomnia. (more on sleep-onset insomnia later)

Over the course of the spring, I had started to find podcasts like Jocko Podcast (which led me to read Jocko’s “Extreme Ownership”) and I began to ask myself, what are the common traits of successful people?

Most were early risers. (shocked) After thinking about it, it made sense.

Most ate breakfast. (shocked again) Hmmmm …

Rediscovering Mornings

So I began to eat breakfast every single day for the past month. Having adjusted my sleeping patterns over the course of the spring, waking up early has become a delightful new habit. I used to be a total grump in the morning and now I believe I am quite friendly in the mornings. Once I fixed my sleep pattern, I was ready to conquer breakfast. 340x340

Breakfast. That was challenging at first. I tried cooking breakfast, but realised that it took way too long to cook it myself. So, I began to look around for something that would work: Valio Profeel protein yogurt which is lactose free (since I’m lactose intolerant).

I cycle through the flavors so that I don’t eat the same flavor on back to back days. I also add high protein muesli on mornings when I know that I need to do a lot and don’t want to snack before lunch.

Initial Findings

I was totally unprepared for the effect that early rising and eating breakfast would have on my weight. It has started to drop! The overall trend is weight loss at the moment. Though small, it is dropping.

The next mountain to tackle is exercise. Anyone who knows me well, knows that Jose + sports is totally incompatible. I am trying to think of some sport that I can do consistently that I would enjoy.

So, if you’re not eating breakfast, get to it! It is good for you.
